The Journal of General Virology is a peer-reviewed academic journal that covers research into viruses affecting animals, plants, insects, bacteria and fungi, including their molecular biology, immunology and interactions with the host. Antiviral compounds are also covered. Established in 1967, it is published monthly by the Society for General Microbiology, in Reading, UK. As of 2010, its Editor-in-Chief is Richard M. Elliott.

All content from the journal's foundation is available online as PDFs and, from 1999, also in text format. Papers are currently available free 12 months after print publication; additionally, all papers are published online ahead of print publication.

Its 2010 impact factor was 3.568.[1]
